H1 Tag SEO: Should Your H1 Match the Title Tag?
H1 tag SEO advice says the H1 should match the title tag. Across 147 pages where the two strings are identical by construction, here is what the data shows.
Most H1 tag SEO guidance answers a question Google has settled on record and skips the one nobody has tested. Semrush’s H1 page, dated March 11, 2024, states that “Google recommends matching your H1 tags to your title tags to prevent inaccurate article titles from showing up in search results” (Semrush). The word “recommends” in that sentence is a link, and it goes to Google News Publisher Help, to a page titled “Best practices for your article pages”. That page does say it, under a section headed “Prevent inaccurate article titles”: “Match the title of your article page (in the HTML <title> tag) to the title of your article (in <h1> or equivalent)” (Google News Publisher Help).
Google’s Search-side documentation says nothing of the kind. The title link page, last updated 2025-12-10, lists “Heading elements, such as <h1> elements” as one of nine inputs Google draws on when it builds a title link, sitting next to the title element, the og:title meta tag, anchor text and “Other text contained in the page” (Google Search Central). So the advice is genuine Google guidance that has crossed a product boundary: it is published for Google News article display and repeated as a Search ranking practice.
Whether matching the two strings helps a page rank is the separate question, and I cannot settle it either. That limitation is worth stating before any numbers appear: my site contains no page that breaks the rule. Across 147 published posts the H1 and the title tag are the same string, byte for byte, because a single frontmatter field renders both. Zero variance gives zero effect size. What the site can show is what a fully matched corpus actually ranks like after 16 months, and which content attribute out of the ones I measured moves with position at all.
Every figure below comes from one Google Search Console export for swapbiswas.com, search type Web, covering 2025-05-01 to 2026-08-31, joined to the 147 markdown files on disk. The domain is Domain Rating 13 and has never had a link deliberately built to it. Read all of it as association on one small site.
What the H1 Tag SEO Rulebook Actually Says
Four rules show up in almost every H1 checklist. Three of them have a live Google statement pointing the other way, and the fourth is a Google instruction written for a different product.

That last row is the one to sit with. The Google News page explains its own purpose in the sentence above the instruction: “We use our crawler to scan your article pages and determine the correct headlines for your content.” Matching the two strings is how a publisher stops Google News printing the wrong headline on a news story. Nothing on the page connects it to organic ranking, and the page never mentions Google Search ranking.
On the Search side, Google describes a selection process instead. It asks you to “Make it clear which text is the main title for the page”, then explains that it “looks at various sources when creating title links, including the main visual title, heading elements, and other large and prominent text”. Making the main title obvious and making two strings identical are different instructions, and Search documentation writes down only the visual one.
Multiple H1 Tags Are Not a Ranking Problem
The multiple-H1 question has been closed for years. Mueller answered it in the #AskGoogleWebmasters video series in October 2019, and answered it again in May 2021: “You can use H1 tags as often as you want on a page. There’s no limit, neither upper or lower bound” (Search Engine Journal).
Both quotes are over five years old and both reach us through trade press relaying a Google video rather than through documentation. The current primary source is thinner and more general: Google’s SEO Starter Guide, updated 2025-12-10, denies an ideal heading count without naming the H1 element.
My own data adds nothing here, because the template renders exactly one H1 on every page. There is no second group. Anyone claiming their site proves a one-H1 rule is in the same position, unless they deliberately shipped a split.
Should Your H1 Match the Title Tag?
For Google News article pages, yes, and Google publishes the instruction. For ranking in Search, the effect size is unknown: no Search documentation asks for it and nobody has published a test. Measuring it needs two groups on the same domain: pages where the H1 and title are identical, and pages where they differ in a controlled way, published in the same window, on comparable topics, against comparable competition.
Running that split across different sites instead of within one site imports the confounder that swamps cross-site content studies. A confounder is “variables affecting both a cause and outcome of interest”, in the definition Byrnes and Dee give in Ecology Letters. Domain authority qualifies: it plausibly affects both whether a site bothers with disciplined title conventions and where its pages land. Search Engine Land names that blind spot in SERP-level analysis, noting that “Since we’re only looking at the SERP itself and individual page factors, these domain-level influences act as a black box”.
The confounder is not hypothetical. Ahrefs measured a Spearman correlation of 0.131 between Domain Rating and ranking position across “the top 1,000,000 keywords with the most search volume from the US” (Ahrefs). Small, real, and bigger than anything I found on a content attribute.
How 147 Pages Got Byte-Identical H1 and Title Tags
The mechanism is a few lines of templating. src/components/Hero.astro:15 renders the page H1 from a title prop. The blog template passes entry.data.title into that prop. MainHead.astro writes the same entry.data.title string into the <title> element. One field, two outputs, no human in between.
Manual drift is impossible here. An editor cannot retitle the page heading and forget the meta title, or shorten the meta title for the SERP and leave a longer H1 on the page, because there is only one string to edit. Static Astro output fixes the rendered HTML at build time as well, so there is no client-side rewrite to check. If you run a template-rendered site, the SEO work a vibe-coded site still needs starts from that same property: the template either gets it right everywhere or wrong everywhere.
The accident produced something most SEO datasets do not have. In a scraped SERP study, H1-to-title alignment varies across sites in ways you cannot observe or control. Here it is pinned, on a real corpus, over a real measurement window. The cost of pinning it is that the variable is now untestable, which is the trade every controlled setup makes.
A Fully Matched Site Still Averages Position 25.4
Over the 16-month window, the property recorded 164,564 impressions and 186 clicks, a sitewide click-through rate of 0.11%, at an average position of 25.4 on desktop and 29.3 on mobile. Of 147 posts, 124 picked up at least one impression and 23 recorded none. Search Console reports 137 of 141 submitted URLs indexed.
Here is where those URLs actually sit:

Every one of those URLs carries a perfect H1-to-title match, and one of them sits in the top three, on two impressions. The 31 URLs parked at positions 21 to 50 hold more impressions than any other band and return 24 clicks between them, which is the striking distance keyword problem in its most expensive form.
None of that is evidence the matching rule does nothing. It is evidence the matching rule is not sufficient, on a Domain Rating 13 domain with no link building behind it. Those two readings get conflated constantly, and my data supports the second one.
Title Length Correlates With Position at r = -0.261
I tested content attributes against Search Console average position across the 71 posts with at least 100 impressions. Below that floor, average position rests on a handful of impressions and is noise. One attribute came back with a coefficient worth printing.

Position is a number where lower is better, so a negative coefficient means longer titles sat at better average positions on this site. The spread is narrow by design: my titles run from 33 to 60 characters with a median of 56, because I enforce a 60-character ceiling to stop Google truncating the SERP snippet, and every post on the site sits inside it.
Because the H1 and title tag are the same string here, that is equally a correlation between H1 length and position. The two cannot be separated on this site, and any post reporting one of them on a template-rendered site is reporting both.
Five caveats belong next to the number rather than in a footnote. The sample is 71 pages on one domain. The coefficient explains 6.8% of the variance in position, leaving 93.2% to everything else. A p-value near 0.03 is marginal, and I measured several attributes against the same outcome, which inflates the chance that one clears 0.05 by luck. The character range is 27 wide, so this says nothing about titles of 80 or 100 characters. And in this same dataset, two other content attributes flip sign when I move the impression floor from 10 to 500; I did not run that sensitivity sweep on title length, so treat -0.261 as fragile until someone does.
Weak Correlation on One Confounded Site
Measuring within a single site removes the confounder that ruins cross-site studies, since domain authority is identical on every row. That is the genuine advantage an n of 71 has over the “11.8 million Google search results” Backlinko analysed for its ranking-factors study (Backlinko), where every row is a different domain.
Measuring within one site introduces other confounders instead. My posts differ in topic, in publish date, in how contested the target query is, and in how many internal links point at them. I controlled for none of those. A 60-character title may sit at a better position because I write longer titles for more specific, less contested queries, and the specificity is doing the work.
Ahrefs attaches a calibration note to the coefficients it publishes, calling them “generally considered weak correlations or even very weak correlations on the Spearman scale, but that doesn’t mean that these things aren’t important”. A within-site r of -0.261 sits in that same weak territory, on a sample four orders of magnitude smaller. It is an argument for measuring again, not for rewriting titles.
Five Things I Did Not Measure
Stating these keeps the finding from being over-read:
- A page with a mismatched H1 and title tag, because none exists in the corpus
- Multiple H1 tags, for the same reason: the template renders one
- Click-through rate by title length, because 186 clicks over 488 days will not survive being split into bands
- The impression-floor sensitivity sweep applied to title length
- Keyword placement inside the H1, which I have never varied deliberately

H1 Tag SEO Best Practices That Survive the Evidence
What holds up once the folklore is stripped out is short, and most of it removes work rather than adding it.
Render the H1 and the title tag from one field if your CMS allows it. Google asks for the match on news article pages and says nothing about it for Search ranking, and no published test measures the ranking effect, but a single source string removes a whole class of drift and costs nothing to implement. Mine has run that way for 147 posts.
Stop auditing H1 counts. Google’s on-record position since 2019 is that multiple H1 headings are fine, and the live documentation denies an ideal heading count. Heading order is worth getting right for screen readers, on Google’s own reasoning, and is not a Search issue.
Make the main title visually obvious. This is the one H1 instruction Google publishes for Search, on its title link documentation:
Consider ensuring that your main title is distinctive from other text on a page and stands out as being the most prominent on the page (for example, using a larger font, putting the title text in the first visible
<h1>element on the page, etc)
That is a rendering instruction rather than a string-equality one.
Keep the title inside 60 characters so the SERP snippet survives, and accept that the length correlation I found inside that window is weak enough to ignore when a longer title reads worse. The H1 tag SEO debate is loud because it is cheap to argue about and expensive to test. My corpus answers a narrower question than the one people ask: a site with 147 perfectly matched H1s and title tags, at Domain Rating 13 with no links built, averages position 25.4.
