ChatGPT Go Free in India: What Happens After 12 Months

OpenAI says the ChatGPT Go free in India offer ended as of 21 January 2026. Free years end from 4 November 2026, then renew at the current fee, Rs 399 on the web.

If you got ChatGPT Go free in India, the earliest your free year can run out is 4 November 2026: OpenAI’s India promotion article opened sign-ups on 4 November 2025 and pushed each first bill back by 12 months. On 16 October 2026, that article redirected to OpenAI’s main ChatGPT Go article, and neither the Go plan page nor the pricing page mentioned a free year.

Look up your renewal date on your own billing page or app store subscription this week and choose Free, Go or Plus before it arrives, because on that date the default is an automatic charge. Free is a closer substitute than it was when you signed up: since August 2026, OpenAI has given Free users the same unlimited everyday text chats as Go.

Timeline of the ChatGPT Go free offer in India: sign-ups opened on the ChatGPT website and Google Play on 4 November 2025, and in the iOS app, billed by Apple, by 5 November 2025; the last archived copy of OpenAI's India promotion article is dated 11 January 2026; OpenAI's release notes say the promo had ended as of 21 January 2026; Internet Archive copies from 3 February 2026 show a redirect to the main ChatGPT Go article, and the live URL still redirected on 16 October 2026; the earliest free year ends on 4 November 2026 and the last ones by 21 January 2027

Is ChatGPT Go Still Free in India?

No, not for new sign-ups. OpenAI gives no exact last date, but its release notes, read on 16 October 2026, say that as of 21 January 2026 the India promotion had ended. Accounts that redeemed keep Go free until their 12 months end, then renew at the current Go fee (₹399 a month on the web) unless they cancel.

I ran these checks logged out on 16 October 2026 from an Indian connection, after Cloudflare’s trace returned loc=IN:

Renewal Dates for ChatGPT Go Free in India, by Sign-Up Route

Your free year ends 12 months after your own redemption, so the date depends on when and where you signed up. The routes below come from the 11 January 2026 copy of OpenAI’s India promotion article, the last one archived before the offer closed, unless a cell names another copy.

  • The promotion had ended as of 21 January 2026, so the last free years run out by 21 January 2027.
  • On the web, the plan and its dates sit under Settings in ChatGPT; a store subscription sits in the App Store’s or Google Play’s subscriptions page.
  • If you redeemed with UPI, the India promotion article warned of a temporary charge of “INR (₹) 1 on your account every billing basis” that “will be refunded”. Indian Express reported a temporary ₹2 charge for cards.

What Happens After the 12 Free Months of ChatGPT Go?

At month 12, the current monthly Go fee is charged to the payment method you added, unless you cancel first. The terms, quoted from the archived India promotion article and OpenAI’s live help pages:

What happensOpenAI’s wordingWhere it is written
The renewal charge”At the end of the 12-month period, we will automatically charge your payment method the current monthly ChatGPT Go fee unless you cancel in advance.”India promotion article, in all three archived copies
Later price changes”we may adjust pricing over time as we learn from early use and gather feedback”What is ChatGPT Go?
Billing after month 12”Subscriptions are billed automatically monthly, and can be canceled anytime.”What is ChatGPT Go?
Paying a year up front”Currently, we do not support annual billing or the option to pay for multiple months in advance for ChatGPT Go, Plus, or Pro subscriptions.”What is ChatGPT Go?

Coming back after cancelling”You cannot redeem the promotion after canceling for the same account - if you want to resubscribe, you will be charged the monthly ChatGPT Go fee.”India promotion article

Keep Go, Drop to Free or Upgrade to Plus After Month 12

Prices in this table come from the India pricing file and include GST, and the multi-currency article says UPI “is available for Go and Plus plans”. Feature cells come from OpenAI’s pricing page unless a cell names another page.

What Go adds over FreeFile uploads, data analysis and image creation marked “Limited”; a 27K GPT Instant context windowThe same three marked “Yes”; a 54K context windowEverything in Go, per the Plus card

*The comparison table’s footnote reads “Usage must be reasonable and comply with our policies.” The Free and Go cards add “Unlimited text chats subject to abuse guardrails”, and the Plus card says “Limits apply”.

Plus adds GPT-6 Sol in chat: OpenAI’s 7 October release notes say “Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise use GPT-6 Sol; Free and Go use GPT-6 Luna”, and the pricing page agrees. OpenAI’s Go article disagrees on the model: it still says “Think uses GPT-5.6 Luna”, a model the pricing page marks “No” for Go. Every row where Go and Plus differ, and the other places OpenAI’s pages disagree, are set out in my ChatGPT Go vs Plus comparison. If your work needs more than Plus, I list the rupee cost of each Pro tier and a Business seat in a separate guide.

How I would read it:

  • Drop to Free when your week is mostly text chat. The Go article says “Free and Go users both have unlimited everyday text chats”, and OpenAI’s pricing page puts Go’s extras in uploads, images, data analysis, voice, memory and context (the Go article itself says voice limits match Free).
  • Keep Go when you hit Free’s tool limits. The release notes that gave Free and Go unlimited text chats in August 2026 also said “Limits will still apply for file uploads, images and other tools.”
  • Upgrade when ads or deep research are the problem. Go has no Ads-Free option, and the pricing page lists deep research as “Limited” on Free and Go. None of the OpenAI pages I read says whether upgrading before your renewal date ends the remaining free months, so upgrade in the last few days of your free year, when little is at stake.

Paying for Go or Plus does not change the training setting: the pricing page marks content as used to train OpenAI’s models, with “Opt-out available”, on Free, Go and Plus alike, so check that setting whichever plan you keep. My guide to using ChatGPT for sales and marketing lists what never to paste into a personal account.

If the alternative you are weighing is Claude, my Claude Pro price breakdown for India sets Go against Claude Pro at each Indian checkout, including the App Store and Google Play figures for Go. My comparison of Claude and ChatGPT by marketing job sets Claude Pro against ChatGPT Plus if you are weighing the upgrade instead.

Does ChatGPT Go Show Ads in India?

It can. OpenAI’s ads FAQ, updated 14 October 2026, says “Ads may appear for users on the Free and Go plans”, and TechCrunch reported on 27 August 2026 that “OpenAI said on Thursday that it will start showing ads on its ChatGPT Free and Go subscription tiers in India.” OpenAI’s Go article, updated 12 October, still says only “We may start testing ads in ChatGPT Go in the future.”

PointThe ads FAQ’s wording
Plans without ads”Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts will not have ads.”
Where ads sit”Ads can appear below the end of a response”, and they are “clearly labeled as sponsored”
Ads-Free on Go”Ads-Free is a Free-plan option. If you’re on a paid plan, you’d need to switch back to Free to use it, or upgrade to a plan that’s already ad-free (like Plus or Pro).”
The cost of Ads-Free on Free”lower usage limits and reduced feature access (for example, fewer messages and no access to some tools like image generation or deep research)“
Chats that never show ads”Temporary Chats will not show ads.”
Users under 18”We do not show ads to accounts identified as belonging to people under 18.”

None of the OpenAI pages I read names India as a place where users see ads. The ads FAQ describes a rollout “to eligible users on the Free and Go plans in select regions” without listing them, and the release notes record rollouts for the US (9 February 2026), Australia, New Zealand and Canada (16 April 2026) and the UK (4 June 2026), with no India entry as of 16 October 2026. India is listed as “Available” on OpenAI’s Ads Manager availability page, but that page covers advertisers based in India, not who sees ads.

How to Cancel ChatGPT Go Autopay Where You Paid

OpenAI’s cancel article, updated 14 October 2026, says to cancel “through the platform where you purchased it”:

Where you paidSteps in OpenAI’s cancel article
chatgpt.com, by card or UPISign in, open your account menu, select Settings, select Billing, then under Cancel plan select Cancel
Apple App StoreOn the iPhone or iPad, open Settings, select your name, then Subscriptions, then ChatGPT, then Cancel Subscription, and confirm
Google PlayIn the Play Store app, open Subscriptions, select ChatGPT, then Cancel subscription; on the web, open your Google Play subscriptions, select Manage next to ChatGPT, then Cancel subscription

From the same article:

  • “Cancel at least 24 hours before your next billing date to avoid being charged for the next subscription period.”
  • “Uninstalling the ChatGPT app does not cancel your subscription.”
  • “Canceling stops future renewals. It does not automatically refund previous charges.”
  • Deleting your ChatGPT account cancels a subscription billed directly by ChatGPT, but “It does not cancel Apple App Store subscriptions.”
  • “A subscription purchased on chatgpt.com does not appear in your Apple or Google Play subscriptions.”

OpenAI’s pages differ on the menu and on what you keep after cancelling:

  • Where billing sits on the web: the Go article says profile icon, then Settings, then Account; the cancel article says Settings, then Billing. Look under both.
  • Access after cancelling a free promotion: the archived India promotion article said “you will lose access to ChatGPT Go at the end of your current 30-day billing cycle”. OpenAI’s promotions-and-referrals article, updated 29 July 2026 and written for partner promo codes, says “If it was a free promotion, your access may end immediately upon cancellation.” The cancel article says that after an ordinary cancellation “paid features remain available until the end of the current billing period”.

When to cancel, if you want every free month: in the last few days before your renewal date, and at least 24 hours before it. Cancelling then keeps you clear of both promotion rules above: under the archived India promotion article you keep Go to the end of that cycle, and if the promotions-and-referrals article’s “may end immediately” rule applies instead, you lose a few days at most.

If You Paid by UPI, Cancel the AutoPay Mandate Too

Google Pay’s help center describes recurring UPI payments, including “Subscriptions and other merchant requests”, as UPI AutoPay mandates that you approve in the app. Its steps to revoke a live mandate are: tap your profile picture, select Autopay, tap the mandate in the “Live” tab, choose “Cancel autopay” and enter your UPI PIN.

  • What revoking does: “After you revoke a mandate, merchants can’t debit the money from your account for that mandate,” per Google Pay’s Manage AutoPay page.
  • The warning you get: “You’ll get a notification 24 hours before any debit from the bank,” on the same page. Do not wait for it to decide, since OpenAI’s own cut-off is also 24 hours before the billing date.
  • If the mandate sits in PhonePe or Paytm: PhonePe’s article on subscription mandates says to go to your “PhonePe Profile > Autopay Settings and delete the mandate”, and Paytm’s guide to deactivating UPI AutoPay goes from your profile icon to “UPI & Payment Settings”, then “Automatic UPI Payments”, where you pick the mandate and cancel it (both read on 16 October 2026).
  • Lost track of the app that holds the mandate: NPCI says its MyUPI platform, launched on 10 September 2026, “provides users with a single view of UPI transactions and AutoPay mandates across banks and UPI apps” (NPCI’s announcement).

Other Free Routes to ChatGPT Go, Checked on 16 October 2026

None of the OpenAI pages I read offers a free Go year to a user in India today. What each route says:

RouteWhat its page saysFor a Go user in India
Back to School offer”four free monthly billing periods of ChatGPT Plus” for students “enrolled at eligible U.S. degree-granting institutions”, claimed by 31 October 2026No: US students, and the plan is Plus
ChatGPT Free referral campaignIndia, Indonesia and Mexico, 18 August to 17 September 2026: “Each qualifying referral doubles the referrer’s ChatGPT Free usage limits for seven days.”Ended, and it raised Free limits only
Free trial invitesEligible users may be able to invite friends and family to “a free, limited-duration trial of an otherwise paid ChatGPT subscription”Only if an invite reaches you; OpenAI sets the plan and length per campaign
Partner promo codesThe promotions-and-referrals article says to obtain a code “from the partner (for example, by SMS or through their portal)” and names no partnerOnly if a partner issues you one
Revolut30 July 2026: Go “Free for up to 12 months, depending on their plan” for Revolut retail customers; the announcement names no countriesNot confirmed: the same announcement address on Revolut’s India site returned a 404

For the same question about Claude, my dated check of Claude routes for a student in India lists who has to act on each one.

ChatGPT Go Free in India: Decide Before the Renewal Date

For anyone who got ChatGPT Go free in India, the 4 November 2026 above is only the earliest renewal. The date that decides your charge is the one on your own billing page or store subscription, and prices, plans and terms can change before it arrives, so read that page on the day you choose Free, Go or Plus.

Set a calendar reminder two days before your renewal date.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ChatGPT Go still free in India?

Not for new sign-ups. OpenAI's release notes say the India promotion had ended as of 21 January 2026, and on 16 October 2026 its India promotion article redirected to the main ChatGPT Go article. Accounts that redeemed before then keep Go free until their own 12 months are up.

What happens after the 12 free months of ChatGPT Go?

OpenAI's India promotion article said it would automatically charge your payment method the current monthly ChatGPT Go fee unless you cancel in advance. From then on Go bills monthly, and OpenAI offers no annual billing for it.

Will ChatGPT Go charge Rs 399 automatically after the free year?

Yes, unless you cancel at least 24 hours before your billing date. If you redeemed on the ChatGPT website, OpenAI charges the current Go fee, which was ₹399 a month with GST included on 16 October 2026; through Google Play or the App Store, the store charges its own current price.

Does ChatGPT Go show ads in India?

It can. OpenAI's ads FAQ, updated 14 October 2026, says ads may appear for users on the Free and Go plans, and TechCrunch reported on 27 August 2026 that OpenAI would start showing them to Free and Go users in India. Plus, Pro and Business accounts have no ads.

Should I keep ChatGPT Go or drop to Free?

Drop to Free if most of your use is text chat, since OpenAI says Free and Go both have unlimited everyday text chats. Keep Go if you hit Free's limits on file uploads, images or data analysis every week. If ads bother you, Plus has none, and Free's Ads-Free option removes them at lower limits.
