Claude Student Discount India: What Exists and What Doesn't

17 min read

As of 10 October 2026 there is no Claude student discount Indian students can claim on Pro or Max. See the seven routes that do exist and who has to act on each.

“We do not offer standard discounted pricing for any of our paid plans, including Pro plans,” says Anthropic’s Pro plan help article. For a student in India, that is the direct answer to “Claude student discount India”: no individual plan carries a student price. My advice is to stop hunting for a promo code and ask the person who can sign: someone in the office that buys software for your institution, or the faculty member who runs your research group.

Anthropic lists no student price for Claude Pro or Max, in India or anywhere else, as of 10 October 2026. A student in India can use the Free plan, pay the standard price with the annual billing discount, or get Claude through an institution or research group that provides it.

Seven routes to Claude for students in India, each checked on 10 October 2026 against the page that defines it:

RouteWhat the vendor’s page saysWho has to actFor a student in India, 10 October 2026
Free plan”$0”, “Free for everyone” (Claude pricing page)YouOpen at 18 or older; India is on Anthropic’s list of supported locations
Claude Pro”Per month with annual subscription discount ($200 billed up front). $20 if billed monthly.”, beside a $17 figure on the pricing pageYouOpen, at the same price as any other buyer in India; rupee prices by checkout are in my Claude Pro price in India breakdown
Claude for Education”A comprehensive university-wide plan for institutions, including its students, faculty, and staff.” (education page)Your institutionOpen where the institution has bought it; the page shows nine institutions by logo, none of them Indian
Claude Campus, including the Claude Builder Club”Receive a USD3,600 cash stipend” and “Students anywhere in the world can apply to any of our programs.” (Campus page)You apply, Anthropic selects”The program is closed for Fall 2026”. The page lists a stipend for student leaders and no plan discount
Team plan for scientists”Standard seats are free. Premium seats are $15 per month.”, for 12 months (program page)Your principal investigator (PI)Possible for a graduate student whose PI is verified; the page says “around the world” and names no country
Claude for Teachers”free for verified US K-12 educators” and “for educators, not students” (setup article)A US teacher, school or districtNot open
GitHub Copilot Student”Available to verified students”, with “Auto model selection only” (GitHub’s Copilot plans page)You, through GitHub EducationOpen to verified students, but it is GitHub’s assistant and you cannot pick a Claude model

In that table, annual billing is the only price reduction on a paid Claude plan that you can turn on yourself. The other reduced Claude prices are granted to an institution, to a verified principal investigator or to US K-12 educators. Each quote is the page as it was served, logged out, to a connection in India on 10 October 2026. Program windows and prices change, so recheck the page for your route before you act on it.

Diagram of seven Claude routes for a student in India as of 10 October 2026, grouped by who has to act: the Free plan, Claude Pro at a US list price of $20 a month or $200 a year and GitHub Copilot Student are routes you take yourself; Claude for Education is bought by your institution; the Team plan for scientists is applied for by your principal investigator; Claude Campus pays selected student leaders a USD 3,600 stipend and is closed for Fall 2026; Claude for Teachers is for verified US K-12 educators

Does Claude Have a Student Discount?

No, not for an individual. As of 10 October 2026, none of the Anthropic pages linked here shows a student price, a student verification step or a student discount code for a Claude plan.

The sentence this page opens with sits in the Pro article under the heading “How can I get a free or discounted Pro plan?” (the page’s metadata dates its last change to 22 September 2026), and the Max plan article repeats it for Max 5x and Max 20x. Both add two limits: “We occasionally run limited-time promotions, but we don’t have any standing discounts available upon request”, and “Our Support team cannot issue one-off discounts or coupons.”

Anthropic does use the word discount on the pages below, and on none of them is it a student-only price on an individual plan:

WhereAnthropic’s wordingWho gets it
Pro on annual billing”annual subscription discount”, on the pricing pageAnyone who pays for a year up front
Education plan”Comprehensive access for all university members at discounted rates”, on the pricing pageAn institution that buys the plan
Team plan for scientists”this discounted Claude Team plan”, in the program page’s FAQA verified principal investigator’s research group
Usage bundles”Larger bundles come with bigger discounts” (Buy usage bundles)Pro, Max and Team subscribers who prepay for usage credits
Artifact usage promotionAfter Claude creates or edits an artifact, “a portion of the work that follows uses 50% less of your five-hour session limit”, and “After the discount period ends, messages count at the standard rate”, from 1 to 15 October 2026 (promotion article)Pro, Max and Team plans, and Free plans from 7 October

The last row is the promotion that was running on the day I checked: it is published in the help center, it has an end date, and its FAQ says “There’s no code or setting to turn on.”

What Claude’s Help Center Returns for India and Student Discount

I ran four searches on Anthropic’s help center on 10 October 2026:

SearchResultsWhat came back
India1”Where can I access Claude?”, the list of supported locations, with India on it
student discount10Two Claude for Teachers articles, two Claude for Education articles, the Artifact usage promotion, usage bundles, two invoice explainers, identity verification and the Cyber Verification Program
student6The same Teachers and Education articles, identity verification, and the Team plan for scientists
coupon9First result: “Why is a coupon or promotion not available for my account?”

None of the four returned an article with a student price for an individual plan. The “student discount” search matched the two words separately: five results on student and five on discount. The student hits are the Claude for Education and Claude for Teachers articles and an identity verification article that lists student IDs among the documents it does not accept. The discount hits are the Artifact usage promotion, usage bundles, two invoice explainers and a “contracted discount” in the Cyber Verification Program.

Claude Student Discount India: What Each Route Needs From You

The Free Plan: Open in India at 18 or Older

QuestionWhat Anthropic’s pages say
What do you get?”Chat on web, desktop, and mobile”, “Search the web, create files, and run code”, “Memory across conversations”, “Connect your apps and tools”, “Create Artifacts” and “Claude Design, Slides, Docs”, per the Free card on the pricing page
What is missing? The pricing page’s comparison table marks Claude Code, Research and Opus “No” on Free, and caps Projects at “Up to 5”
Who can sign up?Creating an account needs “a phone number from a supported location” (sign-up article), and India is on the list
How old must you be?”Claude, our consumer product, is only available to people over 18 years.” (age assurance article)

A school student under 18 cannot hold a Claude account at all, so the discount question starts at 18.

When Free runs out in the middle of an assignment, my guide to the four ways back from a Claude usage limit says which of them a Free account has, and my roundup of free AI tools for marketing work shows where Claude’s free tier fits next to other free assistants. Anthropic Academy also lists a course, AI Fluency for students, as “Register | FREE” with a certificate of completion; its page offers no Claude access or credits.

Claude Pro Student Discount in India: Standard Price, Annual Billing Only

  • The price. The Pro article says the plan costs “$20 per month (US), with pricing in your local currency where supported”, adds that “Annual subscriptions are billed once yearly at a discounted rate”, and tells you to “Visit claude.ai/upgrade or check your mobile app store for current pricing in your region.” The Claude Pro price breakdown linked in the route table has the rupee figures by checkout, the annual-plan arithmetic and Claude Pro against ChatGPT Go in India.
  • Promotions. Anthropic’s coupon article, dated 16 March 2026, says “Coupons and promotions are generally only available to users trying out a paid plan for the first time.” It adds that App Store subscribers on iOS or Android “are unable to take advantage of promotions at this time”. By that article, a coupon or promotion generally needs a first paid subscription bought directly, outside the app stores. The Artifact usage promotion of 1 to 15 October 2026 works differently: its article says “If you’re on an eligible plan, the discount applies to your account automatically.”
  • Claude Code. The pricing FAQ says “Claude Code is included in all paid plans”, so there is no separate Claude Code price to discount. What else each plan includes is in Claude vs Claude Code, plan by plan.

If the choice is Claude Pro or ChatGPT Plus, Claude and ChatGPT compared job by job, with Pro against Plus covers it.

Claude for Education: Your Institution Buys It

The pricing page lists Claude for Education as the “Education plan”, and that block shows no price. It promises discounted rates and “Dedicated API credits and educational features for student learning”, and the education page’s button is “Contact our Education team”.

QuestionWhat Anthropic’s pages show
Which institutions appear on the education page?Nine, by logo: University of San Francisco, London School of Economics and Political Science, Northeastern University, Champlain College, Northumbria University Newcastle, Syracuse University, Dartmouth, University of Virginia and University of Pittsburgh. None is Indian, and the page’s text does not mention India
How would you know you have it?The guide for students and faculty, dated 9 September 2026, describes access “through your university-sponsored account” and says “Sign in with your university email.”
What if that email already has a personal Claude account?“you can select between your previous account and the new university-sponsored account”

Anthropic’s 16 February 2026 Bengaluru office announcement says educational and instructional tasks make up 12% of Claude.ai use in India and, under the heading “Reaching students in low-income communities”, names partnerships with Pratham and Central Square Foundation. It announces no university plan and no student price for India.

Claude Campus and the Claude Builder Club: A Stipend by Selection

QuestionWhat the Campus page says
What is it?Three tracks for student leaders: a Claude Builder Club “For undergrads”, Claude Campus Conversations for “a STEM or humanities master’s student”, and Claude Science workshops “For PhDs and postdocs”
What do leaders get?”All selected campus ambassadors receive a USD3,600 cash stipend subject to program terms.”
What do club members get?Leaders “Share regular updates, tips and resources (like API credits) with members”; no amount is stated
Can a student in India apply?Yes when applications are open, by the page’s wording: “Students anywhere in the world can apply to any of our programs. However, our Grad and PhD programs may select from a smaller pool of schools during the initial pilot period.”
What are the conditions?”You’ll need to be 18+ and have work authorization in your country of study to participate in the program.”
What does it cost?”It’s free to apply and free to participate.”
Is it open on 10 October 2026?No: “The program is closed for Fall 2026”. The page lists “Applications open September 1 and close September 12” and a program that “runs from September 2026 to June 2027”, and gives no date for another round
Who runs it?”Claude Campus Ambassadors is run by Anthropic, with programmatic support from an external agency.”

On Anthropic’s Education contact page, the two links under “For students” are “Apply to be a Claude Campus Ambassador” and “Sign up to be a Student Builder”. When I followed them on 10 October 2026, both redirected to the Campus page, which is closed for Fall 2026, so neither link is a separate way in. The Campus page does not say what proof of work authorization it asks for.

The Team Plan for Scientists: Free Seats Through Your PI

QuestionWhat Anthropic’s pages say
What is the offer?”Verified principal investigators qualify for a Claude Team subscription plan and then add their research team to Standard Seats for free, or Premium seats for $15 per month.” The program page shows Standard at “$0/month” against “regularly $20/month”
Who can apply?”Principal investigators (PIs) or equivalent at accredited universities and nonprofit research institutes working in the natural sciences, mathematics, computer science, engineering, and related fields”
Where does a student fit?”Once verified, PIs can add additional group members including postdocs, graduate students, and researchers”, in groups “From 1 to 25 seats” (help article on the plan)
How long, and for how many?”Promotional pricing for 12 months” on the program page; the offer terms, effective 27 August 2026, limit it to “an initial group of 10,000 Scientists”
Does it reach India? The terms require you to “be located in a region where the Plan is available” and say “Anthropic determines eligibility in its sole discretion”; none of the three pages cited in this table lists accepted institutions

A lab at an Indian institution finds out at verification, which the program page says takes “5-7 business days” for most applications. The help article also tells a PI to “Check with your institution first”, because the plan “is for small research groups whose institutions don’t have an enterprise agreement in place.”

Claude for Teachers: US K-12 Educators Only

Claude for Teachers gives verified educators a year of free access if they sign up by 30 June 2027, but “US K-12 schools and districts qualify”, and the setup article adds: “Student accounts aren’t part of this offering.” A teacher at a school in India is outside it too.

Is Claude Free for Students Through GitHub?

Not as a Claude subscription, and not as a model you can pick. GitHub gives verified students its own Copilot Student plan at no charge, and as of 10 October 2026 that plan offers auto model selection only. GitHub’s notices, in date order:

DateWhat GitHub published
12 March 2026Students moved to “a new GitHub Copilot Student plan”, and “some premium models, including GPT-5.3-Codex, GPT-5.4, and Claude Opus and Sonnet models, will no longer be available for self-selection” (GitHub’s announcement)
24 June 2026”Copilot Free and Student plans will now use Copilot auto model selection as the default and only model selection experience.” (GitHub changelog)
10 October 2026, as readThe plans page lists Copilot Student as “Free”, with “An allowance of GitHub AI Credits”, “Excludes third-party agents” and “Auto model selection only”

What that leaves a student who wants Claude:

  • Auto may route a prompt to a Claude model. GitHub’s 12 March notice said that through Auto mode students “continue to have access to a powerful set of models from providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google”. Its auto model selection docs say Auto “chooses from supported models, subject to your policies and subscription type”, and the supported-models table they link to includes several Claude models.
  • The Claude coding agent is excluded. GitHub’s Anthropic Claude agent page says “Anthropic Claude is available in paid Copilot plans”, and the plans page marks third-party agents as not included on Copilot Student.
  • The Student Developer Pack has no Anthropic offer. On the pack page, the word Claude appears once, inside another vendor’s offer that names Claude Code as a client.
  • Eligibility is broad. GitHub’s student application page asks that you are “enrolled in a degree- or diploma-granting program”, can prove current student status and are “at least 13 years old”.
  • Activation can lag approval. The student setup page warns: “If only paid options appear, do not complete a purchase. Wait a few days and try again.”

Copilot Student is worth claiming if you write code.

Five Claude Student Discount Claims, Checked Against Primary Pages

ClaimWhat the primary page saysVerdict on 10 October 2026
A promo code gets students Claude Pro for lessThe Pro article says promotions “are typically announced through our official channels when available”, and the coupon article says they are generally only available to first-time subscribersNo student code on any Anthropic page I read; a real promotion is announced by Anthropic
A college or .edu email unlocks a student priceNo Anthropic page I read describes a way to verify student status for a discount. A university email is the sign-in for a plan the institution has already set upNot supported
A shared or resold Pro account is a cheap legitimate routeConsumer Terms: “You may not share your Account login information, Anthropic API key, or Account credentials with anyone else. You also may not make your Account available to anyone else.”Breaks the terms the account holder accepted
A Claude Builder Club gives members free Claude ProThe Campus page does not mention Pro, Max or any subscription, and puts no amount on the API credits a club leader may shareNot on the page; what a club gives its members is for that club to confirm
Anthropic turned down a discount for Indian studentsIssue #67092 in the Claude Code repository, a request that included a 50% discount for verified Indian students, was opened on 10 June 2026. An automated account labelled it “invalid” (“Issue doesn’t seem to be related to Claude Code”) and closed it on 13 June with the comment “this doesn’t appear to be about Claude Code”Automated triage of an off-topic issue; the comment says nothing about pricing

Gift subscriptions “are currently unavailable to purchase” as of 10 October 2026, per Anthropic’s gifting article, so a relative cannot buy you a plan as a gift from Anthropic today. Anthropic also publishes the addresses its marketing email comes from, all “ending in anthropic.com or claude.com” (official list), so a discount email from any other domain is not Anthropic’s marketing.

Claude Student Discount India: Ask the Person Who Can Sign

The “Who has to act” column of the route table names two parties you can email: whoever buys software at your institution, and your principal investigator. A short message to each is where I would start.

To your institution’s IT office, library or dean’s office:

Subject: Does [institution] have Claude for Education?

Anthropic sells institutions Claude for Education, a plan that covers
students, faculty and staff: https://claude.com/solutions/education

1. Does [institution] already have this plan, or a Claude Enterprise agreement?
2. If not, could [office] ask for a quote through "Contact our Education team"
   on that page?

To your principal investigator, if you work in a research group:

Subject: Could you apply for Anthropic's Team plan for scientists?

Anthropic's Claude Team plan for scientists gives a verified principal
investigator free Standard seats for the group for 12 months:
https://claude.com/programs/team-plan-for-scientists

Would you apply as PI and add me as a group member?

For everything that depends on you alone:

  • Use the Free plan until its limits stop your work more than once a week.
  • If you write code, apply to GitHub Education and activate Copilot Student.
  • If you pay, choose the checkout first. The Claude Pro price breakdown linked in the route table sets the App Store, Google Play and web checkouts side by side, and they do not show one price. Anthropic’s coupon article also says App Store subscribers cannot use promotions at this time.
  • If you want to lead a campus program, recheck the Campus page in August: its application dates, September 1 to September 12, carry no year.

Until Anthropic publishes a student price, treat any page that promises a Claude student discount Indian students can redeem as unverified, and check it against the Pro article, the pricing page, the education page and the Campus page. Then send the email to your institution.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Claude free for students in India?

On your own, only through the Free plan, which is open to anyone aged 18 or over in a supported location such as India. As of October 2026 Anthropic's pricing page lists no Claude student plan. The no-cost routes to paid features run through someone else: an institution that has bought Claude for Education, or a verified principal investigator who adds you to the Team plan for scientists.

Is there a Claude Code student discount in India?

No. Claude Code is included in every paid Claude plan, so its price is the plan's price: as of October 2026 Anthropic's US list price for Pro is $20 a month, or $200 for a year billed up front. The Free plan does not include Claude Code.

Does a Claude Builder Club give free Claude Pro?

Not according to Anthropic's Claude Campus page, which does not mention Claude Pro. It says club leaders share resources such as API credits with members and receive a USD 3,600 cash stipend, and on 10 October 2026 it said the program is closed for Fall 2026.

What is the Claude Pro price in India for students?

The same as for everyone else: there is no student price. Anthropic's Pro plan article lists $20 a month in the US, with pricing in your local currency where supported, and says the current price for your region is shown at claude.ai/upgrade or in your mobile app store. Annual billing costs less than paying monthly.

Can students get Claude free through GitHub?

Not as a Claude subscription. GitHub's Copilot Student plan is free for verified students, but as of October 2026 GitHub's docs say its models are available through auto model selection only, so you cannot pick a Claude model, and third-party agents such as the Anthropic Claude coding agent are excluded.
