ChatGPT Plus Free Trial in India: What OpenAI Says
Is there a ChatGPT Plus free trial in India? What OpenAI's help pages publish, what Gizbot and Digit reported, and who can get a free month, checked 31 Oct 2026.
A ChatGPT Plus free trial in India is possible only when OpenAI shows a free month on your own account: Gizbot reported on 6 October 2026 that select Indian accounts saw a “Claim free offer” button with Plus at ₹0, while an account that had subscribed to ChatGPT Go before saw the regular ₹1,999 price. OpenAI’s only published trial terms are general ones: its free-trial FAQ says some promotions need a payment method and that a trial renews as a paid subscription unless you cancel before it ends.
I treat the free month as something to check for on your account, never something to plan a budget around. It has no OpenAI page, no published end date and no offer-specific terms, so the only written terms are OpenAI’s general ones (the trial FAQ and its Plus promotions article) and the monthly price the trial turns into.
Is There a ChatGPT Plus Free Trial in India?
Not one you can sign up for. As of 31 October 2026, no OpenAI page publishes a Plus trial for India. Gizbot and Digit reported a one-month Plus offer on some Indian accounts in January 2026, and Gizbot a second wave in October. Press reports say it needs payment details and renews at ₹1,999 a month.
I read these pages logged out from India on 31 October 2026; the upgrade screens the press describes need a signed-in account, so everything below about them comes from the outlet named next to it. What each OpenAI page said:
| OpenAI page | What it says about a free Plus trial |
|---|---|
| Promotional subscriptions and free trial invites FAQ | General rules only. Details of each promotion reach “eligible users through email or from within ChatGPT”, and, on who can send invites, “Not all users or regions are included in every promotion.” India is not named. |
| ChatGPT Plus promotions and referrals | General terms for Plus promotions: some are only for people who “have never had a ChatGPT Plus subscription before”, most “auto-renew to the standard ChatGPT Plus monthly rate”, and with a free promotion “your access may end immediately upon cancellation.” India is not named. |
| What is ChatGPT Plus? | ”Price: $20/month (billed monthly).” The article has no trial section and says OpenAI does “not support annual billing or the option to pay for multiple months in advance”. |
| ChatGPT release notes | No entry about a Plus trial. The only India promotion in them is the 3 November 2025 ChatGPT Go offer, marked “Update: as of January 21, 2026, the promo has ended”. |
| ChatGPT Plus plan page | Buttons read “Try ChatGPT Plus”; the page text states no free period. |
The per-country file that OpenAI’s pricing page calls for India, https://chatgpt.com/backend-anon/checkout_pricing_config/configs/IN (undocumented, read 31 October 2026) | Plus at ₹1,999 a month, tax inclusive, the same figure as my rupee price guide. The file lists prices, not account-specific offers. It also holds a Plus “year” entry that no OpenAI page offers; the rupee price guide covers it. |
| Back to School offer for students | Four free months of Plus, for students at “eligible U.S. degree-granting institutions” only. |
Documented vs Press-Reported: Routes to a Free Month of Plus
| Route | Status, 31 Oct 2026 | Source and date | Payment method needed | What it renews into |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free trial invite from an eligible user | Documented, no India campaign named | OpenAI trial FAQ; its example is “for example, ChatGPT Plus" | "Some promotions require adding a valid payment method to start the trial" | "a paid subscription … using the payment method on file” |
| Promo code from an OpenAI event, email or partner | Documented, no India partner named | Same FAQ: “follow the redemption link or instructions included with your offer”; the Plus promotions article covers partner codes, “for example, by SMS or through their portal” | Per the offer’s terms | Per “the discount, start date, and renewal terms” shown at checkout |
| 2026 Back to School offer | Documented, US only, claim deadline 31 Oct 2026 | OpenAI help article and student page | ”A valid payment method is required to activate the offer" | "$20 per month unless you cancel” |
| One-month Plus offer in India, first wave | Press-reported only | Gizbot, 20 January 2026 (Kabir Jain), which credits an X post by Tibor Blaho on 19 January, and Digit, 20 January 2026 (Bhaskar Sharma) | Yes, per both | Digit: “auto-renew is enabled” |
| One-month Plus offer in India, second wave | Press-reported only | Gizbot, 6 October 2026 (Carlsen Martin) | Yes: “cards and net banking”, and UPI “may not work for every user” | Plus at ₹1,999 a month, per Gizbot |
| 12 free months of ChatGPT Go in India | Documented, ended as of 21 January 2026, and it was Go, not Plus | Release notes | Card or UPI | Covered in what happens when the free Go year ends |
Three things the table shows:
- None of the three press stories links to an OpenAI page, and none of OpenAI’s pages mentions an India Plus offer.
- The documented trial terms are generic. The FAQ says the plan, length and eligibility of each campaign arrive by email or inside ChatGPT, so your inbox and the screen on your account are where the India offer’s terms would show.
- The two press waves point different ways for Go users. Gizbot’s January story says “even users on ChatGPT Go can upgrade to Plus for the 30-day trial period”; in October, Gizbot’s test account that had subscribed to Go before was shown the full price.
Who Can Get ChatGPT Plus Free in India, by Reader Type
Find your row. “Documented” means an OpenAI page says it; “reported” means only the named outlet does.
| You are | What OpenAI documents | What the press reported | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| A Free user who has never paid for ChatGPT | Invites go “generally” to “new users or users on free plans” (trial FAQ) | Gizbot, 6 October: an account with no paid history was shown the free offer | Open the Plus upgrade screen. If it shows ₹0, note the trial’s end date the day you claim it |
| A Go user still on the free Go year | Nothing on combining the Go promo with a Plus trial. The FAQ warns an invitee with an existing plan “may not be eligible (even if they cancel their plan)“ | Gizbot and Digit, 20 January: Go users could take the Plus month but could not return to free Go afterwards | Keep the free Go months unless a month of Plus is worth losing them; a claimed Plus month renews at ₹1,999. The earliest free Go years end from 4 November 2026, per the Go renewal guide linked in the table above |
| A paying Go user | ”Generally, only users on the free plan can accept the free trial invites” unless a campaign makes an exception | Gizbot, 6 October: an account that had subscribed to Go saw ₹1,999 | Treat Plus as a paid upgrade, and use the row-by-row Go vs Plus comparison to decide |
| A current Plus user | Same rule: invites are generally for free-plan users | Nothing reported for existing Plus accounts | No trial to look for; you are already paying |
| A college student in India | No student offer for India on OpenAI’s pages; the Back to School offer is US only | Nothing reported | See the student section below |
| A student at a US college | Back to School: four free monthly billing periods of Plus, “Claim the offer by October 31, 2026”, then $20 a month | Digit’s January story also reported the one-month offer in the US | From 1 November the claim deadline has passed; check the student page for a new offer |
| Outside India, or paying with a card issued abroad | A promotion may be “not valid in your region or with your payment method” (Plus promotions article); your card must be “issued by a bank located in one of those supported regions” (decline article) | Digit, January: the one-month offer was also reported in the US | Check the upgrade screen in your own country; the India reports do not apply |
Before you claim on the web, check where you pay now: if you subscribed in the iOS or Android app, OpenAI’s duplicate-charge article warns that “If you start a new subscription on one platform before canceling the old one on another platform, you can end up paying for more than one subscription at the same time.” The Back to School article adds that store-billed subscriptions “are not supported while they remain store-billed”.
Is ChatGPT Plus Free for Students in India?
No. OpenAI’s 2026 student offer is for students “enrolled at eligible U.S. degree-granting institutions”, and its student page reads “An $80 value for eligible U.S. college students. Claim by October 31.” OpenAI’s pages list no student price or trial for India.
The other student routes on OpenAI’s pages, as of 31 October 2026:
| Route | Who it is for | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Back to School 2026: four free months of Plus | US college and graduate students, verified through SheerID, claim deadline 31 October 2026 | OpenAI help |
| Codex for Students: $100 in ChatGPT credits | ”verified university students in the United States and Canada”, announced 20 March 2026 | Release notes |
| ChatGPT Edu and OpenAI’s India education licences | Bought or distributed through universities and institutes | The students section of the rupee price guide linked above |
Outside OpenAI, Google runs a student offer in India, covered in my Gemini student offer guide, and every Claude route open to a student in India is in a separate check. If you are choosing between the two assistants rather than chasing a free month, my Claude vs ChatGPT comparison for marketing work sets Claude Pro against Plus.
Does the ChatGPT Plus Free Trial Renew Automatically?
Yes. OpenAI’s trial FAQ says: “ChatGPT will automatically renew as a paid subscription at the end of the initial free trial or promotional subscription period using the payment method on file, unless you cancel before the trial or promotional period ends.”
What a renewed Plus subscription costs and how it bills:
- ₹1,999 a month on the web in India, GST included, on 16 October 2026 per the plan-by-plan table in the rupee price guide, and still ₹1,999 in the India price file named above on 31 October 2026.
- Monthly only. The Plus article says OpenAI does not support “annual billing or the option to pay for multiple months in advance”.
- Charged to the payment method you added to claim the trial. Gizbot’s October story tells readers to cancel “the subscription or automatic renewal mandate before the free period ends”.
How to Cancel Before the Free Month Renews
OpenAI’s cancel article says to cancel “through the platform where you purchased it” and to “Cancel at least 24 hours before your next billing date to avoid being charged for the next subscription period.” If you paid with UPI, the mandate steps for Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm are in the cancel section of the Go renewal guide linked above.
What you keep after cancelling depends on the offer, and no OpenAI page covers the India one. The Plus promotions article says “If it was a free promotion, your access may end immediately upon cancellation”, while the Back to School article says “your Plus access continues through the end of the current monthly billing period” and any remaining free months are forfeited. For when to cancel, see the same cancel section of the Go renewal guide.
ChatGPT Plus Free Trial Payment Was Not Approved: What OpenAI’s Help Says
None of the OpenAI billing help articles I read on 31 October 2026 prints the wording “payment was not approved”: I read the titles in its Account, login and billing collection and the two payment articles below. The closest article is Why was my credit card declined?, and it starts from one fact: “We typically don’t receive detailed decline reasons from banks, so reaching out to them directly is often the quickest way to resolve payment issues.”
| Likely cause, per OpenAI | What OpenAI says to do |
|---|---|
| Wrong card details | Check the “card number, expiration date, CVC, and billing address (including zip/postal code)“ |
| Not enough money on the card | Make sure the card has “sufficient funds” |
| The bank blocks the payment type | ”Some banks block certain online or international transactions by default”; contact your bank or card provider |
| OTP or 3D Secure step failed | Allow pop-ups, turn off ad blockers and VPNs, try an incognito window, “complete the bank’s OTP/app approval without closing or refreshing the checkout”, and ask the bank to enable 3DS/SCA for online, recurring or international payments |
| Too many subscriptions on one card or device | The card and device limits article says a checkout reading “Too many subscriptions associated with this card or device” is “different from a bank decline”; contact Support if you think the restriction is wrong |
| Card issued outside a supported region | ”Your payment card must be issued by a bank located in one of those supported regions.” |
| A renewal payment failed | The renewal troubleshooting article says to clear cache and cookies, call the bank and confirm “both you and your card issuer are located in a supported country” |
Three more points for an Indian checkout:
- UPI is listed for Plus. OpenAI’s multi-currency billing article says “UPI is available for Go and Plus plans.” Neither payment article above mentions UPI, and Gizbot reported that on the free-month offer UPI “may not work for every user”, so a card or net banking, the two options Gizbot names, are the others to try.
- If the payment step fails while you activate a promotion, the Plus promotions article says to “try another card accepted for the offer”, and warns that a “failed charge can sometimes succeed on a later retry, resulting in a charge even if the first attempt failed.”
- When you contact support, the decline article asks for the product, where the error appeared (adding the card, checkout or renewal), “the exact error, and the local time and time zone”, and no card number or security code.
ChatGPT Plus Free Trial in India: Read Your Own Upgrade Screen
The ChatGPT Plus free trial in India exists, on the evidence available on 31 October 2026, only as an account-specific offer that Gizbot and Digit reported in January and Gizbot again in October, with no OpenAI page behind it. That makes your own upgrade screen (or an email from OpenAI) the only source that can answer the question for you, and OpenAI’s general trial and Plus promotion articles the only written terms: a payment method may be needed, and the trial becomes a paid ₹1,999-a-month plan unless you cancel at least 24 hours before it renews.
If the Plus card on your account shows ₹0, put the renewal date in your calendar before you claim the free month.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a ChatGPT Plus free trial in India?
Not one you can sign up for. As of 31 October 2026, no OpenAI page publishes a ChatGPT Plus trial for India. Gizbot and Digit reported a one-month Plus offer on some Indian accounts in January 2026, and Gizbot reported a second wave on 6 October 2026, so the only way to know is to open the Plus upgrade screen on your own account.
Is ChatGPT Plus free for students in India?
No. OpenAI's 2026 Back to School offer of four free months of Plus is for students at eligible U.S. degree-granting institutions and had a claim deadline of 31 October 2026. OpenAI's pages list no student price or student trial for India.
Does the ChatGPT Plus free trial renew automatically?
Yes. OpenAI's free-trial FAQ says ChatGPT renews as a paid subscription at the end of a free trial or promotional period, using the payment method on file, unless you cancel before the period ends. In India, Plus is ₹1,999 a month on the web.
Why does ChatGPT say my payment was not approved?
None of the OpenAI billing help articles I read on 31 October 2026 uses that wording. Its card-decline article says OpenAI usually gets no detailed reason from the bank, and lists wrong card details, insufficient funds, a bank block, an incomplete OTP or 3D Secure step, and a card issued outside a supported region. A separate article says a block for too many subscriptions on one card or device is different from a bank decline.
Can ChatGPT Go users get a Plus trial?
OpenAI does not say for the India offer. Gizbot and Digit reported in January 2026 that Go users could take the free month of Plus but could not return to the free Go plan afterwards, and Gizbot reported on 6 October 2026 that an account that had subscribed to Go before saw the full ₹1,999 price.
