Instagram Hashtag Limit: 5, Not 3 or 30, and Who Says So
The Instagram hashtag limit is 5 per reel or post, set on 18 December 2025. Here is where the 3 and the 30 come from, with each source and the date it gives.
Five. On 18 December 2025, Instagram’s @creators account posted on Threads: “New hashtag guidance: Starting today, Instagram will allow up to 5 hashtags in a reel or post.” That is the Instagram hashtag limit as of November 2026, and I would write every caption to it and treat each 3 or 30 you still see as either an ended test or a different limit that has nothing to do with your caption.
The Threads page shows no date, so the date comes from Social Media Today’s report by Andrew Hutchinson, published 18 December 2025 and linking that post. The three numbers, side by side:
| Number | What it limits | Who says so | Date |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | Hashtags in the caption of a reel or post | Instagram’s @creators account on Threads | 18 December 2025 |
| 3 | A caption cap some accounts hit during a test | Press reports (PiunikaWeb, Planoly); no Instagram announcement of it that I found | November to early December 2025 |
| 30 | Unique hashtags an app can look up through Meta’s Hashtag Search API per rolling 7 days; also the caption cap Business Today reported before the change | Meta’s Hashtag Search docs; Business Today | Docs updated 17 August 2026 |
What Is the Instagram Hashtag Limit in 2026?
5 hashtags per reel or post. Instagram’s @creators account set that number on 18 December 2025, and no later Instagram announcement I found changes it as of 4 November 2026.
The Threads post ends “Swipe to learn more” over a set of images. Social Media Today quoted Instagram’s fuller wording, linking that post:
“Instagram will gradually update the number of hashtags that you can include in a caption for a reel or post to five. We find that using fewer (up to 5) more targeted hashtags, rather than many generic ones, can improve both your content’s performance and people’s experience on Instagram.”
Three details in that wording decide how to read the rule:
- Caption. The limit is on what you put in a caption.
- Reel or post. Both formats are named. Stories and comments are not.
- Gradually. The post opens with “Starting today”, while the fuller wording says Instagram “will gradually update” the number, so the cap did not have to reach every account on the same day.
Instagram’s Help Center article “Use hashtags on Instagram” did not return its body text to a plain fetch on 4 November 2026: the page gave only its title and the line “You can add hashtags to your photos and videos on Instagram.”, so I quote no number from it.
Instagram Hashtag Limit History: 30, a Glitch, a Test, Then 5
The 3 and the 30 come from the months before the announcement. Each row below is dated by the page that reports it:
| Date | What happened | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Before the change | 30 hashtags per caption. Business Today wrote that Instagram was “reducing the maximum limit from 30 to just 5” | Business Today, 19 December 2025 |
| 13 February 2024 | Some users saw a limit pop-up with five as “the maximum number of tags”; in an update dated 15 February, Instagram told Social Media Today “this was a glitch” | Social Media Today, 13 February 2024 |
| 21 November 2025 | Some creators saw “You can only add 3 hashtags to your caption”; PiunikaWeb’s writer could still add more than 3 and called it “an ongoing experiment” | PiunikaWeb |
| 1 December 2025 | Planoly wrote that posts “are now limited to just three hashtags” | Planoly, last updated 1 December 2025 |
| 18 December 2025 | Instagram announced up to 5 hashtags in a reel or post | @creators on Threads |
PiunikaWeb’s November article says “Instagram still documents a 30-hashtag hard limit” and links the Help Center article above. Social Media Today’s December report describes the 3-tag cap as “the most recent experiment” and says five “will become the new universal restriction in the app.”
The 3-tag test was uneven while it ran: PiunikaWeb relays Reddit reports that the cap showed in the mobile app and not in a desktop browser. Those are user reports about a test that the 5 rule replaced, and no Instagram page I could read lists any exception to the 5.
The 30 Hashtags Per Week Limit Is Meta’s API
The “30 hashtags per week” figure is a quota on Meta’s developer API. Meta’s Hashtag Search guide, updated 17 August 2026, says:
- “You can query a maximum of 30 unique hashtags on behalf of an Instagram Business or Creator Account within a rolling, 7 day period.”
- “Once you query a hashtag, it will count against this limit for 7 days.”
- “Fetching media for a hashtag counts as querying it”, including the recent media and top media requests.
The IG Hashtag Search reference (updated 23 July 2024) states the same cap as “a maximum of 30 unique hashtags within a 7 day period.”
That quota applies to software that looks up hashtags, such as a tool that pulls public posts tagged with a campaign hashtag onto a website wall. It does not touch how many hashtags you type. If a tool shows a weekly cap of 30 hashtags, that cap matches this API quota: it limits how many hashtags the tool can query for your account in 7 days.
A second Meta page still prints 30 for captions. The IG User Media reference, updated 28 September 2026, describes the caption field for posts published through the API as “Maximum 2200 characters, 30 hashtags, and 20 @ tags.” I have not tested which number the API enforces today. If you schedule posts through a tool built on it, keep the caption to 5 anyway: that is the number Instagram announced for reels and posts. Meta’s WhatsApp docs set their own caption cap, 1,024 characters for an image or video message sent through the API, listed with the other WhatsApp character limits by field.
| Limit | Applies to | Number | Meta or Instagram page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hashtags in a reel or post caption | Anyone posting | 5 | @creators on Threads, 18 December 2025 |
| Hashtag lookups through the API | Apps acting for a Business or Creator account | 30 unique per rolling 7 days | Hashtag Search guide, 17 August 2026 |
| Caption field for API-published posts | Apps publishing for an account | 2,200 characters, 30 hashtags, 20 @ tags | IG User Media reference, 28 September 2026 |
Does the Instagram Hashtag Limit Apply to Comments and Stories?
Instagram has not said. The @creators post covers “a reel or post”, and the wording Social Media Today quotes names “a caption for a reel or post”; neither mentions comments or Stories.
Comments were an open question in February 2024 as well. Social Media Today’s report on the five-tag pop-up, which Instagram later called a glitch, said “Maybe Instagram’s also going to limit the discovery value of hashtags posted within comments”, which was speculation, and Instagram’s December 2025 wording did not settle it.
Until Instagram’s Help Center or the @creators account states a rule for comments or Stories, I would plan as if:
- The caption carries your 5 hashtags, on reels and on feed posts.
- Moving extra tags into the first comment relies on a gap Instagram has neither confirmed nor closed.
- Stories sit outside what the announcement names, so check the app itself before relying on any number there.
Do Hashtags Still Help Reach on Instagram?
Instagram ties the limit to relevance, not to a reach figure. Its quoted wording says fewer, more targeted hashtags “can improve both your content’s performance and people’s experience on Instagram”, and Social Media Today adds that Instagram is “limiting this to five to avoid misuse.”
Instagram chief Adam Mosseri has said the same about reach. Social Media Today’s 18 December 2025 report, linking one of his reels, wrote that Mosseri “once again said that hashtags don’t improve visibility on Instagram”, while calling them “a great way to let people know what a post is about and connect posts.”
Neither Instagram’s quoted wording nor that report gives a number for reach, and neither the @creators post nor the wording Social Media Today quotes says that a post with more than 5 hashtags gets demoted. Any page that puts a percentage on the reach of a 30-tag post is giving its own figure, not Instagram’s.
With five slots, the choice of tags matters more than the count. A rule I would use:
| Slot | What goes in it | Example for a B2B launch post |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | The topic, as a searcher would type it | #productmarketing |
| 2 | The narrower topic inside it | #saaslaunch |
| 3 | The audience | #b2bmarketing |
| 4 | A campaign or event tag you own or join | Your launch or event hashtag |
| 5 | Optional: a brand tag, or leave it empty | #yourbrand |
The example tags are illustrations, not tags I have tracked. Skip broad tags such as #explore or #reels, the examples Business Today’s report gives of the broad terms Instagram discourages. Other platforms draw the line elsewhere: YouTube’s Help page ignores every hashtag on a video that carries more than 60, as set out in the YouTube hashtag and tag limits. When organic reach is not enough, a boost is the paid route, and what an Instagram ad costs in India comes down to a budget you choose, not a fixed rate.
Pages That Still Print an Old Number
Several pages still print a number other than 5, because they were written before 18 December 2025 or describe a different limit. As each page showed it on 4 November 2026 (the Ads Guide row on 5 November):
| Page | Number it prints | Date on the page | Why it differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Planoly, “Instagram is Limiting Users to 3 Hashtags Per Post” | 3 | Last updated 1 December 2025 | Written during the test, before the 5 rule |
| PiunikaWeb, three-hashtag experiment | 3 in a test, 30 in the Help Center | 21 November 2025 | Reports the test and the Help Center as they stood then |
| Meta’s IG User Media reference | 30 per API-published caption | Updated 28 September 2026 | A developer page that still lists 30 |
| Meta’s Hashtag Search guide | 30 unique per 7 days | Updated 17 August 2026 | An API lookup quota, not a caption rule |
| Meta’s Ads Guide, Instagram Feed image ads | 30 per ad | Read 5 November 2026 | An ad-spec page, listed under “Text Recommendations” |
The ad row is the newest finding. Meta’s Ads Guide page for Instagram Feed image ads, as of 5 November 2026, lists “Maximum Number of Hashtags: 30” under Text Recommendations, beside 125 characters of primary text and a 40-character headline. It is the only hashtag figure on that page, and it covers paid placements, so it is no reason to put more than 5 in an organic caption.
The test I use for a platform limit is the one I applied to LinkedIn’s 220-character headline limit: the number counts when the platform’s own page prints it. Instagram’s 5 passes that test through the @creators post; I found no Instagram page behind the 3.
Other platforms count hashtags differently. On X, a hashtag counts toward the post’s characters as the # plus the tag text, inside X’s weighted 280-character limit. When the same post goes to LinkedIn, the image and video specs from LinkedIn’s Help pages are in my LinkedIn post size reference.
Write Every Caption to the Instagram Hashtag Limit of 5
The Instagram hashtag limit is 5 per reel or post, from Instagram’s own @creators account, while the 3 belonged to a 2025 test and the 30 now lives mostly in Meta’s developer docs. If you draft captions with AI, add “no more than 5 hashtags” to the constraints of any social media prompt for ChatGPT you reuse for Instagram.
Instagram went from a 3-tag test to the 5 rule within a month in late 2025, so recheck the @creators account, Meta’s two API pages and the Help Center each quarter, and watch for a stated rule on comments or Stories. Before your next post, cut the caption’s hashtag list to the five tags that name its topic and audience.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Instagram hashtag limit in 2026?
5 hashtags in the caption of a reel or post. Instagram's @creators account announced it on 18 December 2025, and the wording Social Media Today quotes from Instagram says the change rolls out gradually.
Was the Instagram hashtag limit 3 or 5?
5 is the announced rule. In November and early December 2025 some accounts reported a cap of 3 in what PiunikaWeb described as an experiment, and Instagram's 18 December 2025 announcement then set the number at 5.
Does the Instagram hashtag limit apply to comments?
Instagram has not said. Its announcement covers a reel or post, and the wording Social Media Today quotes names the caption; neither mentions comments or Stories, and no Instagram page I could read on 4 November 2026 answers it.
What is the Instagram limit of 30 hashtags per week?
It is Meta's Hashtag Search API. An app can query at most 30 unique hashtags for one Business or Creator account in a rolling 7-day period. It limits hashtag lookups by tools, not what you type in a caption.
Can you still use 30 hashtags on Instagram?
Not in a reel or post caption under Instagram's December 2025 rule of 5. Meta's IG User Media API reference, updated 28 September 2026, still lists 30 hashtags as the caption maximum for posts published through the API.
