Is Midjourney Free? The One Trial Left and the Plans
Is Midjourney free? Not on the web or Discord. Its docs list one limited trial, in the niji journey app. Web plans start at $10 a month, checked 31 October 2026.
The only free trial Midjourney’s own help centre lists today is “a limited trial” in the niji journey app for iOS and Android, per its Free Trials article, last updated on 10 December 2025. For everyone else, is Midjourney free on midjourney.com or in Discord? No: the same article says “No free trial is currently available in Discord or the midjourney.com website,” and the cheapest plan on the website is $10 a month.
My view after reading Midjourney’s help centre on 31 October 2026: for a marketer making campaign images, the useful number is $24, the monthly cost of Standard on yearly billing, because Standard is the cheapest plan where image generation stops being metered.
Is Midjourney Free?
No. Midjourney has no free plan, and its docs say there is no free trial on the website or in Discord. The one exception is a limited trial in the niji journey mobile app. Everything else on the web or Discord needs a subscription, from Basic at $10 a month to Mega at $120, with 20% off yearly.
Every Way to Use Midjourney Free, Checked 31 October 2026
Each route people ask about, with its status in Midjourney’s own words. Prices and trials change, so each row carries its article’s own updated date:
| Route | Status | Condition | Midjourney article (updated) |
|---|---|---|---|
| midjourney.com website | No trial | ”No free trial is currently available in Discord or the midjourney.com website” | Free Trials (10 Dec 2025) |
| Discord | No trial | Same line; Discord Nitro “won’t give you access to Midjourney” | Discord Nitro Subscription (10 Dec 2025) |
| niji journey app | Limited trial | iOS and Android devices; Midjourney gives no size | Free Trials (10 Dec 2025) |
| Rating images | Free Fast time, subscribers only | ”the top 2,000 members who rate the most images receive an extra hour of Fast time free” each day | Earning Free Fast Time (26 Feb 2026) |
| Surveys | Free Fast time, subscribers only | Offered “occasionally”; the amount varies | Same article |
| Students | Paid | Own account, own subscription, own payment method; schools may reimburse | Educational Use & Student Billing (5 Jan 2026) |
| Schools and non-profits | No discount | Midjourney “does not offer discounts or free plans for organizations”, naming non-profits and educational institutions | Group Plans & Corporate Billing (1 Sep 2026) |
Two routes in that table sound free and are not. The Fast time from rating and surveys can only be spent with “an active subscription”, and it “expires 30 days after it’s given”. And Discord Nitro is Discord’s own paid plan: Midjourney says you do not need it, and having it does not give you access. Sites that advertise “free Midjourney” are third parties, not Midjourney, Inc.
The niji journey Trial: What the App Listing Adds
Midjourney’s Version article describes niji models as “a special series within Midjourney, developed in collaboration with Spellbrush, to focus on Eastern and anime aesthetics and illustrative styles”. The current one, Niji 7, launched on 9 January 2026.
The Free Trials article does not say how big the trial is. The app’s own store page does. On the niji journey listing on Apple’s App Store India, read on 31 October 2026, the provider is listed as Midjourney, Inc., and the promotional line reads: “Create stunning anime characters for free with 20 free generations.” The same listing says accounts and subscription plans can be synced with existing niji journey and Midjourney accounts.
The same page lists these in-app purchases in rupees. They are Apple’s App Store India charges for the niji journey app, not the prices on midjourney.com:
| In-app purchase on App Store India (31 Oct 2026) | Price |
|---|---|
| Mini Plan (Monthly) | ₹499 |
| Basic Plan (Monthly) | ₹999 |
| Standard Plan (Monthly) | ₹2,999 |
| Pro Plan (Monthly) | ₹5,900 |
| 1 Fast Hour | ₹399 |
| 5 Fast Hours | ₹1,999 |
| 10 Fast Hours | ₹3,999 |
The Mini Plan does not appear in Midjourney’s plan comparison, which lists four tiers, and Midjourney’s docs do not say what Mini includes. If you want the trial, install the app on a phone; it is the one place Midjourney says you can generate without paying.
Midjourney Plans and Prices in USD
Midjourney’s Comparing Midjourney Plans article, last updated 18 May 2026, lists four subscriptions:
| Plan | Monthly | Annual (paid upfront) | Fast GPU time | Relax GPU time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $10 | $96 ($8 a month) | 3.3 hr a month (200 minutes) | None |
| Standard | $30 | $288 ($24 a month) | 15 hr a month | Unlimited images |
| Pro | $60 | $576 ($48 a month) | 30 hr a month | Unlimited images and SD video |
| Mega | $120 | $1,152 ($96 a month) | 60 hr a month | Unlimited images and SD video |
Other lines from the same article that change which plan fits:
- Annual billing gives “a 20% discount”, with the full year paid upfront. Midjourney’s How to Subscribe article says yearly billing is selected by default, so pick the “Monthly Billing” tab before you subscribe if you only want one month.
- Extra Fast time costs $4 an hour on every plan.
- Stealth Mode, “which keeps your images and videos private, is only available on the Pro and Mega Plans.”
- All plans renew automatically until you set them to cancel.
The Cheapest Midjourney Plan for Unlimited Images
Standard, at $30 a month or $24 a month billed yearly. Midjourney’s plan article says: “For unlimited image generations with Relax Mode, subscribe to the Standard, Pro, or Mega Plan.” Basic has no Relax time at all, so every Basic image comes out of Fast time: the 200 included minutes plus any extra hours bought at $4 each.
How far 200 minutes goes, using the approximate costs in Midjourney’s GPU Speed article (updated 28 August 2026): an SD prompt costs 0.8 minutes and an HD prompt 1.3 minutes.
| Basic plan, 200 Fast minutes | Approximate prompts a month |
|---|---|
| SD prompts at 0.8 minutes | 200 / 0.8 = 250 |
| HD prompts at 1.3 minutes | 200 / 1.3 = 153 |
Those are my arithmetic on Midjourney’s approximations; Creative and Subtle upscales, Edit Model prompts and video use more. The trade-off on Standard is speed: Relax prompts “wait in line”, with waits Midjourney puts at 0 to 30 minutes. Relax for video is limited to Pro and Mega.
A decision rule from those numbers: if you make a few dozen images a month for posts or decks, Basic covers it. If you iterate on campaign visuals and burn through prompts, Standard removes the meter. If the work must stay private, only Pro and Mega include Stealth Mode.
Midjourney Price in India: Rupee Conversions and Tax
Midjourney’s Payment Currency article says it “accepts payments exclusively in US Dollars (USD)”. Your bank converts the payment at its own rate and “may also charge a foreign transaction fee”. Midjourney publishes no rupee price on the web, so the table below is my conversion, not Midjourney’s.
The rate: on 30 October 2026 the ECB euro reference rates were USD 1.1172 and INR 106.0840 per euro, which gives about ₹94.96 per dollar (106.0840 / 1.1172, rounded to two decimals). The table multiplies by the unrounded ratio and rounds to the nearest rupee.
| Plan | USD monthly | About INR monthly | USD a year | About INR a year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $10 | ₹950 | $96 | ₹9,116 |
| Standard | $30 | ₹2,849 | $288 | ₹27,347 |
| Pro | $60 | ₹5,697 | $576 | ₹54,694 |
| Mega | $120 | ₹11,395 | $1,152 | ₹1,09,388 |
What gets added on top, per Midjourney’s docs:
- Tax. The Tax / VAT Charges article says Stripe “calculates your tax rate at checkout using your billing information”, adds it to the subscription price, and shows the total before you pay. Billing support cannot change it.
- Bank charges. Any foreign transaction fee your card charges, which Midjourney says it does not control.
- Payment methods. The Accepted Payment Methods article names Visa, Mastercard and American Express cards and wallets such as Apple Pay, Amazon Pay, Alipay, Google Pay and Link “in some regions”. UPI is not named, and PayPal “isn’t currently supported”.
The App Store India rupee prices in the niji journey section above are a separate price list, charged by Apple. The app’s plans share names with the web tiers, but Midjourney’s docs do not say they include the same GPU time, and the rupee prices differ from my web conversions (₹999 against about ₹950 for Basic, ₹2,999 against about ₹2,849 for Standard). My web figures are before the tax Stripe adds at checkout and any card fee, so the gap at checkout is smaller than these numbers suggest. For the same kind of comparison on a design tool that does publish rupee prices, see my breakdown of the Canva Pro price in India.
Is Midjourney Free for Students?
No. As the route table shows, each student pays for their own plan. What Midjourney’s student billing article adds:
- No shared accounts or group plans, and no way for a school to manage student accounts under one subscription.
- “Each account may only have one user, and each user may only have one account.”
- A school can reimburse a student, but “the subscription must stay under the student’s control”.
Schools get no discount either (see the table above). Bulk billing for 50 or more yearly Pro or Mega plans exists, with no discount beyond yearly pricing.
Age matters for younger students. Midjourney’s Terms of Service (effective 27 May 2026) require users to be at least 13 and to meet the minimum age of digital consent in their country; below the age to consent, a parent or guardian must agree on their behalf.
Is Midjourney Free for Commercial Use?
Midjourney’s Terms of Service say “You own all Assets You create with the Services to the fullest extent possible under applicable law”, and the plan comparison’s footnote adds: “If you have subscribed at any point, you are free to use your images/videos in just about any way you want.” The Using Images & Videos Commercially article (updated 25 March 2026) says “you own all the images and videos you create, even if you decide to cancel your subscription”, with two exceptions, listed first below:
| Situation | What Midjourney’s docs say |
|---|---|
| Your company grosses more than $1,000,000 a year | You need a Pro or Mega plan to use your images commercially |
| You upscaled another user’s image | It belongs to the original creator; you need their permission |
| You cancelled later | Ownership “persists even if in subsequent months You downgrade or cancel” (Terms of Service) |
| You used the niji journey trial and never subscribed | The Terms’ ownership line carries no subscription condition, but a company over $1,000,000 a year must be on Pro or Mega to own its images; no article cited here addresses niji trial images separately |
| Copyright questions | Midjourney “cannot offer guidance on copyright matters” and suggests a lawyer |
The Terms also grant Midjourney a licence to reproduce and publicly display your prompts and images, and say content is “publicly viewable and remixable” by default. Stealth Mode (Pro and Mega only) is a promise to make “best efforts not to publish” your images; the licence grant applies on every plan. AI music has its own version of this line: Suno’s help center says free-plan songs stay non-commercial even if you subscribe later, covered in what Suno’s free plan lets you do with a song.
Try a Paid Plan With the 20-Minute Refund Rule
Without a web trial, the closest thing to a test run is Midjourney’s refund rule. Its Requesting a Refund article (updated 17 September 2026) says you are eligible “only if you’ve used less than 20 GPU minutes throughout the lifetime of your account”, counting Fast, Turbo and Relax time.
- At the 0.8-minute SD estimate, 20 minutes is about 25 SD prompts (20 / 0.8, my arithmetic). Stop before that if you might want your money back.
- If you qualify, the refund option appears when you cancel. If it does not appear, Midjourney says it cannot refund.
Midjourney Has Opened and Closed Free Trials Before
Midjourney’s free trial has been paused, restored and moved off the web since 2023; the date the web trial ended is not published, so the last row uses the Free Trials article’s updated date.
| When | What happened | Source |
|---|---|---|
| By 1 April 2023 | Midjourney paused its free trial; CEO David Holz cited “extraordinary demand and trial abuse” | The Business Standard, 1 April 2023 |
| August 2024 | The web interface opened to all users and free trial generation returned | The Decoder, 21 August 2024 |
| Free Trials article, updated 10 December 2025 | Help centre: limited trial in the niji journey app only; none on the web or Discord | Free Trials |
Free Image Options That Are Not Midjourney
If you need images at no cost, look outside Midjourney:
- Google’s image models in the Gemini app, and what each Gemini plan gets, are in my comparison of Nano Banana 2 vs Pro.
- My list of free AI tools for marketing covers free design options, including Canva’s free tier and Microsoft Designer.
- For diagrams and charts rather than pictures, code can produce the file; I compared those routes in whether Claude Code can generate images.
Which Midjourney Plan to Pick
So, is Midjourney free? Only for the limited niji journey trial on a phone. For campaign work, I would skip Basic’s 200 metered minutes and price Standard: $24 a month billed yearly, or $30 for a single month, plus the tax Stripe shows at checkout. Open the Free Trials article first; if its date has changed since 10 December 2025, read it before you pay.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Midjourney free to use?
No. Midjourney's Free Trials article, last updated 10 December 2025, says no free trial is available on midjourney.com or in Discord. The only free trial it lists is a limited trial in the niji journey app for iOS and Android. Every other way in on midjourney.com or Discord starts with the $10-a-month Basic plan.
Does Midjourney have a free trial?
Only in the niji journey mobile app. Midjourney's docs call it a limited trial without giving a size; the app's App Store India listing, read on 31 October 2026, says 20 free generations. There is no trial on the website or in Discord.
Is Midjourney free for students?
No. Midjourney's student billing article says each student needs their own account and their own subscription, paid with their own payment method, and a school can reimburse them. Its group plans article says it offers no discounts or free plans for educational institutions or non-profits.
What is the cheapest Midjourney plan?
On midjourney.com, Basic, at $10 a month or $96 a year ($8 a month), with 3.3 hours of Fast GPU time and no Relax mode; the cheapest plan with unlimited image generation is Standard, at $30 a month or $288 a year ($24 a month), per Midjourney's plan comparison on 31 October 2026. The niji journey app also sells a Mini Plan in-app (₹499 a month on App Store India, 31 October 2026), which Midjourney's plan comparison does not list.
How much does Midjourney cost in India?
Midjourney charges in US dollars only, so a card from India pays the dollar price plus any tax Stripe adds at checkout and any bank conversion fee. At the ECB reference rates of 30 October 2026 (about ₹94.96 per dollar, my arithmetic), Basic works out to about ₹950 a month and Standard about ₹2,849 a month, before tax and fees.
