SEO Without Link Building: 164,564 Impressions, 186 Clicks
I ran SEO without link building for 16 months on a Domain Rating 13 site. Here is the measured result: 164,564 impressions, 186 clicks, and where they landed.
Between 2025-05-01 and 2026-08-31, this site earned 164,564 impressions and 186 clicks from Google Search. It has 147 published posts, a Domain Rating of 13, and not one deliberately built link. I have never run an outreach campaign, pitched a guest post, or bought a placement. That makes it a reasonable specimen for the question: what does SEO without link building actually produce?
The two headline numbers disagree with each other. 164,564 impressions says Google is willing to serve the site. 186 clicks says almost nobody encounters it in a position where clicking is plausible. Both come out of the same export.
All site numbers below were pulled from this property’s Search Console export on 2026-09-03, covering the 488 days from 2025-05-01 to 2026-08-31, search type Web. The Domain Rating is from the Ahrefs free endpoint, re-measured 2026-09-12. This is one site, one author and one dataset, so it carries the weight of a case study with a sample size of one.
What SEO Without Link Building Produced in 16 Months
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Impressions | 164,564 |
| Clicks | 186 |
| Sitewide CTR | 0.11% |
| Average position | 25.4 desktop / 29.3 mobile |
| Published posts | 147 |
| URLs with at least one impression | 124 of 147 |
| URLs with zero impressions | 23 |
| Pages indexed | 137 of 141 submitted |
| Deliberately built links | none |
Indexing was never the constraint. Google indexed 137 of the 141 URLs submitted, and 124 of the 147 posts earned at least one impression. Twenty-three posts earned none at all. Whatever links do, they were not the gate on crawling, indexing or eligibility here.
One caveat applies to every per-query table in this post. Search Console caps a query export at 1,000 rows, and it also withholds queries searched very few times. Google’s Search Console documentation says anonymized queries are “included in chart totals, unless a query filter is applied”, so the chart total and the sum of the rows do not match. My 1,000 exported rows carry 103,338 impressions and 49 clicks against the chart’s 164,564 and 186. I cannot separate how much of that gap is the row cap and how much is anonymization, so I am not going to attribute it to either.
Can You Rank Without Backlinks?
Yes, on some queries. Twenty query rows in the export hold an average position between 1 and 3. A row falls in a band when its average position is at least the lower bound and below the upper bound plus one, which is the cut rule behind every band table here.
Fourteen of those twenty carry 12 impressions or more. This is all of them:
| Query | Avg position | Impressions | Clicks |
|---|---|---|---|
| swapnil biswas (branded) | 2.7 | 289 | 35 |
| what is cross-network in google analytics | 3.4 | 82 | 0 |
| what does cross-network mean in google analytics | 3.0 | 42 | 0 |
| pricing launch decision log & qa gate checklist | 1.7 | 38 | 0 |
| show me agencies providing comprehensive search visibility audits under $5000. | 1.2 | 28 | 0 |
| launch items | 2.3 | 25 | 0 |
| triple checklist product update 2026 | 3.2 | 24 | 0 |
| implement marketing automation | 1.5 | 20 | 0 |
| seo audit cost india 3000 10000 | 3.3 | 20 | 0 |
| google search console | 3.4 | 18 | 0 |
| google analytics cross network meaning | 1.1 | 13 | 1 |
| leading technical seo audit services pricing? | 2.5 | 14 | 0 |
| sales enablement tool selection criteria checklist | 2.5 | 13 | 0 |
| best tool for competitive battlecard creation using conversation data? | 2.4 | 12 | 0 |
Now the honest part. The top-three band recorded 718 impressions, 36 clicks and a 5.014% click-through rate. Thirty-five of those 36 clicks came from one branded query, my own name. Remove it and the band holds 429 impressions and 1 click, a non-branded top-three CTR of 0.23%. Twenty query rows is a small sample and one of them is doing nearly all the work.
The Queries I Reached Were Long, Literal and Uncontested
Ten of the fourteen rows above run to five words or more. Two end in a question mark and one ends in a full stop, which is what a query typed as a full sentence looks like when it reaches Search Console. Four name a specific artifact rather than a subject: a decision log, a product-update checklist, a tool selection criteria list, and a battlecard tool chosen on conversation data.
That is the reachable set for a site with no links. Every one of these is a phrase somebody typed once or twice with a precise object in mind, on a topic with no agency, no vendor and no budget competing for it. Two of the four biggest by impressions are the same Google Analytics definition asked two ways, which is a definitional query rather than a buying one.
The two short entries need a warning attached. “Launch items” at position 2.3 and “google search console” at position 3.4 look like head terms, but they carry 25 and 18 impressions, and Google’s Search Console guidance is that “a position number can mean different things in different situations, and so you should not make simple assumptions”. An average position on eighteen impressions is not a ranking claim, and I do not present it as one.
Positions 1-3 Earn 99x the CTR of Positions 4-10
The full band table, measured on this property’s own 1,000 query rows:
| Position band | Queries | Impressions | Clicks | CTR |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1-3 | 20 | 718 | 36 | 5.014% |
| 4-10 | 169 | 9,917 | 5 | 0.050% |
| 11-20 | 223 | 26,857 | 5 | 0.019% |
| 21-50 | 385 | 37,057 | 3 | 0.008% |
| 51+ | 203 | 28,789 | 0 | 0.000% |
5.014% against 0.050% is a ratio of about 99 to 1. Positions 4-10 are conventionally described as page one, and on this site page one below the top three produced five clicks from 9,917 impressions across 169 queries.
Strip the branded query and the cliff is smaller but still there: 0.23% at positions 1-3 against 0.050% at 4-10 is roughly 4.6 to 1. That is the defensible floor, and it is the number I would plan against. Either way the clicks live in three slots, and everything from position 4 downward behaves like a rounding error.
This is also why promotion advice needs a payoff check before it gets followed. Moving a page from page two into the 4-10 band is the standard recommendation, and I measured what that move pays on this property in a separate breakdown of striking distance keywords. The band tables above are why I stopped treating page one as the finish line.
63% of Impressions Sit at Position 21 or Worse
Add the bottom two bands: 37,057 plus 28,789 is 65,846 impressions of the 103,338 in the export, or 63.7%. Three clicks between them.
The page-level view says the same thing from the other direction. Across 157 URL rows:
| Position band | URLs | Impressions | Clicks |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1-3 | 1 | 2 | 0 |
| 4-10 | 37 | 20,356 | 42 |
| 11-20 | 48 | 48,630 | 50 |
| 21-50 | 31 | 73,328 | 24 |
| 51+ | 7 | 10,174 | 1 |
| no impressions | 23 | 0 | 0 |
The two views disagree on clicks, and they should. The page table credits 42 clicks to URLs averaging positions 4-10, while the query table credits five clicks to queries in the same band, because most clicks on this site have no query row behind them at all.
Thirty-one URLs sitting at positions 21-50 hold 73,328 impressions, the biggest impression pool on the site, and return 24 clicks. One post carries 34,303 impressions and a single click at an average position of 44.5. It is a breakdown of what an SEO report should contain, and by impressions it is the strongest page I have published; by clicks it is indistinguishable from a page that does not exist.
The same help page defines an impression as counted “whenever an item appears in the current page of results, whether or not the item is scrolled into view, as long as the user need not click to see more results”. A position-44 impression therefore means the result sat in a page of results somebody had loaded, and it does not mean anyone looked at it. A Search Console position is also an average across every impression for that query. Describing these impressions as three pages deep is an inference I am drawing, not something the documentation states, and averaging is one reason checking where a page actually ranks takes more than one number.
Is Link Building Still Relevant to SEO?
On this evidence, crawling, indexing and impressions all arrived without links. What links buy is the difference between the band that pays and the band that does not.
Every query this site reached the top three on was long, specific, or so low in commercial value that nobody has bothered to compete for it. The pages that carry real impression volume here are an SEO audit pricing guide at average position 12.0, an SEO reporting guide at 44.5, and a post about Google reviews at 54.8. I produced 147 posts without links and got a site that is visible to Google and invisible to searchers on anything with a market behind it.
The limit of this finding matters as much as the finding. I never built links, so there is no control group and no counterfactual. I have not measured what 50 referring domains would have done to those positions, and nothing in this dataset can tell you. What it does show is that content volume on its own moved the site into a position band with a measured click-through rate of 0.008%.
The practical read: SEO without link building is a query selection constraint rather than a strategy. If the top three for your query are held by domains with authority you cannot match, publishing a better page gets you impressions in the band that pays nothing.
How a Domain Rating 13 Site Compares to Published CTR Benchmarks
A sitewide 0.11% sounds catastrophic until you check it against sites of the same size. Ahrefs measured whole-site organic CTR across 422,421 websites using anonymized Search Console data and reports a median CTR of 0.56% for the DR 10-20 band in its June 2026 data month. Their method is total clicks divided by total impressions, the same arithmetic as my 0.11%, so the comparison is fair. The same page gives a median of 0.68% for sites with 100-200 indexed pages, and states that “a sub-1% CTR isn’t a failure, it’s the norm when you’re under DR 40”. By that benchmark my site is low for its tier rather than broken, and the figure refreshes monthly, so it will drift.
Do not put my 5.014% next to the famous position-one numbers. Backlinko’s study, built from Google Search Console accounts supplied through Semrush, puts the #1 result at 27.6% CTR. That is a per-keyword figure for a single position on a query mix with commercial and branded intent in it. Mine is a bucketed average across 20 queries on one hobby-scale domain. They measure different objects.
The other half of the context is that clicks are getting scarcer for everyone. Search Engine Land reported SparkToro research finding that Google searches ended without a click 68.01% of the time in the U.S. across the first four months of 2026, using Similarweb desktop and mobile panel data, which is modelled rather than a census. Pew Research Center, tracking the browsing of 900 U.S. adults in March 2025, found users clicked a traditional search result in 8% of visits where an AI summary appeared, against 15% of visits where it did not. Ahrefs’ February 2026 update across 300,000 keywords found that the presence of an AI Overview correlates with a 58% lower average clickthrough rate for the top-ranking page. None of that changes my position problem, but it does mean the reward for solving it is smaller than it was, which is part of why optimizing for AI Overviews is now a separate job from ranking.
The Limits of a Single-Site Experiment
Take the numbers for what they are.
- One property, one author, one topic mix, English only, 16 months. Nothing here generalizes on its own.
- No control arm. I cannot compare against a version of this site that did build links.
- The 1,000-row export cap and query anonymization both apply, so per-query totals are a subset of the chart totals and the two do not reconcile.
- Search Console average position is an average, and Google says position numbers mean different things in different contexts.
- The 5.014% top-three CTR rests on 20 query rows and one branded query. The 0.23% non-branded figure rests on one click.
- The relationship between position band and CTR here is consistent with links mattering, and it tests nothing. Nothing in this dataset isolates a cause.
I would rather publish a result with a stated sample size than an opinion with none. This one is small.
SEO Without Link Building Is a Query Selection Problem
The question worth asking before writing a post is whether the specific query you are chasing can be reached without links. Open the top three results, look at who holds them, and decide honestly whether a page from your domain can displace one of them. If it cannot, you are writing for the 0.008% band, and 147 posts will tell you so 16 months later.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you rank without backlinks?
Yes, for some queries. Over 16 months this site reached an average position of 1-3 on 20 query rows with no links built to it. Those queries were long, specific and low competition, and together they produced 718 impressions out of 103,338.
Is link building still relevant to SEO?
It is relevant to whether a page reaches the top three, which is the only band that paid anything here. Indexing and impressions arrived without links. Position did not.
Why does my site get impressions but no clicks?
Google counts an impression whenever your result appears in the page of results a searcher has loaded, whether or not they scroll to it. On this site 63% of query-row impressions sat at an average position of 21 or worse, where the measured click-through rate was 0.008% or zero.
What click-through rate should a low Domain Rating site expect?
Ahrefs measured a median whole-site CTR of 0.56% for sites in the DR 10-20 band using Search Console data for June 2026. This site recorded 0.11% over 16 months, so it sits well under the median for its own tier.
Does a site with no backlinks still get indexed?
Indexing was not the constraint here. Google indexed 137 of 141 submitted URLs and 124 of 147 posts earned at least one impression, with no deliberate links pointing at any of them.
